“But those who hope in
the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they
will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31
A new year has rolled
around, and you know what that means! As the Lord renews our strength it is
time to renew our gardens that have been patiently waiting on us and the change
of seasons. It's time for a fresh start, new beginnings, and time to revitalize
the garden or perhaps start the garden you've always wanted!
The first step in
getting ready for spring planting is to make sure there are no weeds in your
garden bed. Next, clean up the borders to create a good sense of definition of
where you are working. Creating a border could mean replacing broken boards in
a box garden or even repairing a fence that keeps the critters out.
Of course, don't forget to order the seeds or bulbs that you will plant this
year. Check your local nursery or garden supply center for standard seeds and
local varieties. Shop online for flower and garden seeds at www.burpee.com or www.seedsofchange.com for organic seeds.
This is the optimal time
to sow seeds that need a longer growing season than your average plant. Many
vegetables do well in early spring, like leafy greens (i.e. lettuce, cabbage)
and roots (i.e. onions, carrots). Also, now is the ideal time hunt down and
take preventative measures against garden pests. When it comes to hunting down
pests you want to overturn their hiding spots to expose them to frost. Rake
away any leaves and run a garden fork over the top soil of your garden to bring
them to the surface. Over turn rocks exposing them, then let the cold nights do
the rest.
Last but not least,
clean, repair, and replace your gardening tools. Remove rust, dirt and debris
from last season, replace gloves with holes in them or tools that can't be
repaired. Most importantly, prepare the soil of your heart for all God is going
to do this year!
