Every year the Faith and Science Council of the Seventh-day Adventist Church holds an annual conference. A primary goal of the conference is to affirm the Biblical account of Creation. From its inception the Church has placed a high emphasis on man’s relation to Creation and our duty and privilege to be stewards of it. There are many choices and actions we make every day that have an impact on our world. Here are seven simple yet profound actions you can take to affirm your care of Creation.

1. Turn the lights off when you leave a room. This is one of the most common energy wasting habits we can avoid.

2. Use CFL (compact florescent) or LED bulbs to replace burnt out bulbs. These use 25-80 percent less electricity than incandescent bulbs and last up to 25x longer. They are virtually guaranteed to save you money!

3. Unplug electronics when not in use. Many electronics stay on standby mode rather than shutting off completely. They often use up to 50% of full power in standby! A power strip with a switch can make turning them off completely easy.

4. Running the dishwasher or clothes washer half full wastes water. Fill them up before running. Most clothes washers have settings for smaller loads too.

5. Change your thermostat to match the weather. During hot days when not at home turn it up to 73-75 degrees to save electricity. You can turn it back down when you get home in the evening. This can save up to $400 a year!

6. Remember to change your HVAC filter regularly. Clogged filters contribute to wasted energy by making your system work harder.

7. Be green and save green with back to school shopping. Reuse and fix last year’s school items. Shop second hand as much as possible. When you do get rid of stuff, donate it to a thrift store. School supplies can also be donated to programs that help those in need.

It can be hard to change our habits. But Jesus never promised an easy road. He did promise to give us the power to change! I challenge you to pray every day this week about how God wants you to affirm Creation.
